I have many friends on Facebook. Some of them I personally know and some are ones that I have never met. In the story I am about to share, Janice is a friend and active networking professional that I met at The National Business Experts. She is one of those amazing people that was attracted to this organization. She leads with her heart and is one that I felt honored to have met. I have not been very active in the group, due to career changes and have not seen her in quite some time. So when I saw a message from Janice, I was very excited. As a matter of fact, my face lit up and I told my boyfriend, “I just love her and miss this beautiful soul!” As I read her message I felt a bit confused because the style of writing, things mentioned and engagment seemed off. I have shared the entire conversation below and since this is not the REAL Janice, I have put her name in quotes. The conversation is shared word for word below…typos included.
“Janice”: How are you doing? Me: Hello wonderful you!!! I’m great, how are you?
“Janice”: am fine ery happy now
“Janice”: very happy now
“Janice”: have you heard about the good news yet?
Me: what is the good news? I love good news!
“Janice”: I was wondering if you have heard about the powerball lottery and the promotion made by facebook founder Mr MARK ZUCKERBERG? to help people maintain good standard of living of all the entire community yet??
Me: nope (this is where my excitement dims…I’m thinking this is a scam but wondering if there was something in the news I missed…)
“Janice”: Well, I’d talk to the officer In charge of the promotion FACEBOOK FREEDOM LOTTERY AWARD PROMO (Mr David Williams Sr). He let me know that i won a sum of $150,000. Because they help people. You can check the winners out here to know how real is’t … Did you got yours from him yet?
Note: I removed website link that was shared.
Me: I’m skeptical…(and concerned for you)…did he say he was sending you $150,000?
“Janice”: Really why i think you should have get the money already this is the FACEBOOK FREEDOM LOTTERY AWARD PROMO it was the ups agent men that did deliver the money down to my door step plus when they came to give me the money i did saw your facebook name was among the list so that is why i try to inform you to make sure if you have got yours from him??
Note: This is the point I do a quick search on the internet for FACEBOOK FREEDOM LOTTERY AWARD PROMO and what I found was a series of scams. At this point I’m irritated at the fact that I think one of two things has happened. Either my very kind and trusting friend has fallen victim to a scam or someone has hijacked her account. Either way, I want to connect with her and actually take the conversation from they typed words to spoken.
Me: What’s your phone number?
“Janice”: You just have to write to them now to confirm if your name was till on their winner list and ask how to claim.Did you have the agent contact link with you
Me: Janice, it’s been so long since we have seen each other. I want to call you to chat about other things. What’s your current number?
“Janice”: give me yours and i will call
Me: The last time I saw you at Gia’s event you were doing a water bottle filtration, are you still doing that?
After that last post the conversation went completely quiet. I can only imagine that the person realized that I actually know this person and they are not just a random Facebook friend. I have since reached out to Gia. Gia Heller is the founder of The National Business Experts and the REAL Janice is a member of her group and Gia will be talking to her at their next meeting. The biggest take-away here is to know your friends on Facebook and be wary of what others are doing on the internet. When in doubt ask questions, especially if this is a person that you know. We are all so busy and have a tendency to let the keyboard be our primary mode of communication. There is nothing like the face-to-face meetings and picking up the phone to call a friend. This can happen to the best of us. I would hate to have this happen to me and would certainly want someone to let me know.
